All you really need to serve web pages is a computer and an internet connection. You then need to setup the computer to serve the files with other computers trying to view your web pages. A web host will provide you with a computer or a partition of a computer’s resource to serve your web pages. Typically this computer will be kept in a secure data center with a high speed connection. If the power goes out, there are backup generators to keep the websites up. If the server’s crash they are backed up with failovers to prevent an outage. If the server gets too hot, the air conditioner turns on. If a hacker attacks the server, there is a team of engineers that will respond. Also most servers are top of the line machines built to run for months or years without restarting.
